    I'll never forget hurricane irma. I was a first time mom and knew nothing about it because I was being induced into labor and at the hospital for 3.5 days. I get home and had 3 days to prepare. Didn't get to obviously. My oldest son, now 6, was only 6 days old. I will never forget that fear. Postpartum and scared. We lost power not even halfway through the storm. That's how I knew it would be bad. Day light left still outside, I will never forget the pinkish orange ting to the sky and this eerie feeling I had while helping my partner at the time, board up the windows because our house is surrounded by big oak trees. We were renters btw. Our landlord wouldn't have someone come out and trim our trees. So after the storm we had huge branches on our roof, in the back yard. No power for 3 days. It was hot and had to throw out every bit of food we had. My heart broke that day when my baby had to be in a diaper with the front door and windows open and it was still hot. Thankfully my uncle had a generator and took is in until we had power again. Now I have a 5 & 6 year old and I'm praying Florida doesn't get hit too hard again. Last year idalia hit south of me (fort Myers area) so bad. I pray it misses us again. ❤️

      @Vector_Ze 6 месяцев назад

      The music on this video is all generated using the now-defunct Sony Cinescore Studio 1.0a plugin for the also-defunct Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b. I'm sorry, I'm sure the answer is not what you'd hoped for. Other than the music, the rest of the video was produced with Cyberlink Power Director 15 Ultimate, also an old version, but I still use it. So far as possible, I stick to PRE-Subscription software. So long as they serve my needs, paid & owned programs are vastly preferable. The concept is a boom for software providers, but it seems despicable to me. The original video was recorded with an old Sony HDR-CX260V, now collecting dust after being replaced with a Sony FDR-AX33. Probably a lot more information than you have any interest. But, thank you for watching! I hope you hung around for more than a few minutes.

      Thanks. I'm keeping an eye on it, too. It has been upgraded to a tropical depression as of 16:00 CDT 8/26/23, and is expected to further develop, reaching at least minimal hurricane strength in the next few days. The best forecast track puts this location on the west (weaker) side of the storm at landfall, with a 20-40% chance of sustained tropical storm force winds (=> 39 MPH). I can live with that since August is normally our wettest month of the year with over 7" of rainfall, and we've had less than 1" so far. It could bring some much-needed precipitation. Heck, even the weeds are wilted and brown. I have to admit, feeling a bit of PTSD when a tropical system seems to be taking aim. In any case, I'm making sure our hurricane kit is up to date, just in case. Being days away, the forecast is very much subject to change. The Gulf of Mexico is bathwater warm, which makes me worry about VRI, but I haven't seen that possibility mentioned in the forecasts. Even in the worst case scenario, it would be just a bad storm, not a disaster like Michael, fingers crossed. Thank you for watching.

      How long does the eye phase typically last? For someone who hasn't experienced weather like this would be enclined to think it was over.

    • @Vector_Ze
      @Vector_Ze 11 месяцев назад

      @@andrewclarke3622 It's safe to say that for people who experience a hurricane, most do not experience the eye, since it is a small part of the storm, physically. The center of the storm has to pass directly over your location. It's also fair to say that people who don't experience the eye get a raw deal, since they spend more time in the eyewall, without a respite. But, to your question; there's a lot of variability. The storm's eye can vary in size, and so can the storm's forward motion. Both factors change the duration of the eye experience, as can the matter of if the eye's widest point passes over, or just a more brief passage off to one side or other of the eye. I've lived in Florida for most of my life and have been in hurricane conditions quite a few times (never before a Cat 5), but this was the first time I experienced the eye of a storm. It's not common at all. Our time in the eye, I estimate, was 20-25 minutes. But, other storms that are slow movers and maybe with larger eyes, the 'experience' can last a lot longer. It's hard to imagine anyone familiar with hurricanes mistaking the calm eye as being an all-clear signal, but I suppose it could happen to the clueless. Hopefully, they didn't venture too far from shelter. The second half does not come on instantly, it takes a few minutes to return to dangerous levels, giving time to seek shelter if you haven't gone too far. You're welcome to view the feature length video this one was edited from. In the description there, you can find a linked index in case you don't want to spend 90 minutes watching it. ruclips.net/video/ThzWh46wDDk/видео.html

      I call BS. Where and when did you have these experiences? You must be a very old storm chaser who started with Camille in 1969. The contiguous US has only had four landfalling Cat 5 hurricanes since 1878, Michael being one of them. Thanks for watching!

      @@noobx6855 Katrina made landfall as a strong Cat 3, not a 5. The reason for my comment is that hiker64 claims to have gone through Cat 5 storm(S) plural. There have only been four Cat 5 hurricanes that made landfall in the contiguous states since 1858. The first one likely in a living person's memory was Biloxi, Mississippi (1969). Then there was Homestead, Florida (1992), and the Florida Panhandle (2018). That's literally all of them from 1969 to the present. That indicates a rather old storm chaser chasing all over the Southeast USA over a 49 year period. Add another 20 years for them to have started as a young adult chaser. Possible, but highly doubtful. More likely, hiker64 was thinking of strong storms, like Katrina which you mentioned, that weren't actually Cat 5 at landfall. There have been others that weakened before making landfall. I hope this explains my doubt.

    TS Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida, some 110-120 miles east of this video's locations. Although, at peak intensity if had MSW of 65 MPH, it had weakened to a minimal tropical storm with MSW of 40 MPH, two days later.

    Couple of questions for you....The rain gauge didn't make it through the second half of the storm? Do you remember what kind of rain gauge it was? That was quite impressive it made it through the first half. Also did your car become inoperable after losing the hood. That was some amazing footage you shot!

    • @Vector_Ze
      @Vector_Ze 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching! Both of the rain gauges survived. Surely, being mounted on a deeply planted 4x4 helped (10x10 cm). But, that wouldn't have saved them if they had been hit by large debris. Their position, slightly sheltered on two sides by the house, combined with some blind luck got them through the storm. The dark-colored one is a RainWise Rainew with a wired remote digital display. The transparent gauge is a CoCoRaHS compliant non-electronic unit. My smart fortwo ended up being totaled by my insurance company, but I continued to drive it for four months. The windshield was smashed, the wiper arms were broken, and the paint was pretty messed up too. The body panels weren't badly damaged beyond the paint, in spite of being hit by 2x6 (5x15 cm) lumber from a neighbor's roof, due to their being polycarbonate. But, it was more than 10 years old at the time and the insurance company decided repairs were equal to, or greater than the car's worth. In normal times, you'd be stopped and probably ticketed for driving around with a smashed windshield. But, they weren't normal times and I wasn't bothered. By February, I figured that the leniency period had about run its course. In February 2019, I finally managed to make the 350-mile (560 km) drive down to Palm Harbor, Florida to buy a replacement (another smart fortwo). I've been driving these tiny cars since 2008, when I bought my 1st one brand new. The drive down was a challenge until I got beyond Apalachicola. At one point, in Port St. Joe, I hit a damaged bit of road surface at too high a speed and the wallop was so severe that I stopped and checked for any damage that would keep me from proceeding. At the dealer in Palm Harbor, a helpful mechanic there helped me strip some of my upgrades to the car so I could return with them. Sadly, the first owner of my replacement smart hadn't babied it as well as I did my first one. It's still a fun car to drive, though, and has been reliable transportation so far. Thanks again, for watching and commenting. Now you know, don't ask questions of me unless you are ready to read a short story.

      @@Vector_Ze Lol I actually enjoy reading long detailed answers thanks for the reply! I thought that rain gauge looked like a rainwise! It's awesome they survived, and unbelievable they didn't get hit by debris! Here's a shot in the dark question...do you recall how much rain you recorded during Michael? It sucks about your car, but at least you were able to get a replacement. I live in Gulfport, Mississippi, and my 2004 Toyota Corolla was totaled because of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It only had 15K miles on it I had just got it in April of 2005. How's the Panama City/Mexico Beach area now almost 5 years after Michael?

      @@Dj0287 Actually, I keep records. On 10/10/2018, I recorded 4.46" (113 mm). That's pretty low for a hurricane, but Michael was moving rapidly. We only had severe conditions for around three hours (minus the calm eye). And, the accuracy of my measurement is debatable. The corner where I placed the gauges is fine under normal conditions, but the protection it afforded them may have also affected the precipitation there in extreme winds. In any case, the total was low for a hurricane. Coming up on five years, the most visible remaining evidence of Michael is the depressing reduction in our number of trees, and a lot of empty lots where hurricane damaged structures have been demolished & removed. There are an unusual number of apparently abandoned homes. Most of the surviving trees were disfigured, having lost major branches. Panama City proper was not as severely impacted as were the satellite cities to its east, Callaway, Springfield, and Parker. And of course, eastward from there for a swath that I reckon is 30 miles wide from the coast and narrowing, but extending into Georgia. An estimated 3,000 square miles (7,700 km²) had forest damage that will likely be evident for a generation or two. The storm maintained hurricane status for 180 miles (290 km) from landfall, and 110 miles into the state of Georgia, some 40 miles beyond (NE of) Albany, Georgia. Panama City Beach, which is often erroneously cited as being hit, dodged a bullet. Sure, they got a good storm out of it, but there's no comparison. And since the strong winds there were offshore (from the north), there was no major beach erosion or flooding there. Mexico Beach was heavily damaged by storm surge from onshore eyewall winds. I haven't been through Mexico Beach since 2019, but I am hearing on local TV news that the city is experiencing a bit of a development Boom now. A lot of new constructions. I hope the residents have the common sense to sidestep the condo canyons of PCBch.

      @@Vector_Ze I keep records too!!!! I've been recording high & low temperatures, and rainfall records since May 1995!!!! Yeah the accuracy during hurricanes are definitely debatable. Same here after Katrina we lost a lot of trees, and the trees that survived were brown from salt water for months after. And even to this day 18 years later there are empty lots where homes, and business used to be especially along hwy 90. How's Tyndall AFB? I know they had major damage. Most people like to associate a hurricane with the major city they impact. Like with Katrina most people think it only hit, and impacted New Orleans, and we were on the east side with the strongest winds, and storm surge. Or like Hurricane Harvey where people associate it with Houston, when it hit Rockport.

      @@Dj0287 Panama City Beach is not the local population center. It has a resident population of about 20,000. Whereas Panama City proper's population is nearly double that. And, the Metro Panama City population is nearing 180,000, dwarfing Panama City Beach. I'm pretty aware of Katrina's impact on Mississippi. Katrina, for obvious reasons like the catastrophic flooding of a major US city, got the headlines for its impact on New Orleans. But, for sheer storm fury, Mississippi got the brunt of it. P.S. your comments provoked me to re-watch my video for the first time in at least a year. Dang, we were lucky.
